Falu Mine
Our neighbors in Dalarna
Less than an hour from Leksand lies one of Sweden’s most fascinating tourist attractions—Falu Gruva. Copper was mined here in Stora Kopparberget for nearly a thousand years, and the mine was long one of Europe’s most important workplaces. Since 2001, Falun and the Kopparberg region have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Experience a thousand years of history
Take your family on a guided tour down into the mine—67 meters below ground, through winding tunnels and vast chambers. The Mining Museum, Sweden’s first technical museum, offers interactive exhibits suitable for the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest. Above ground, the impressive Stora Stöten open-pit mine awaits—a kilometer-wide memorial to the great collapse that occurred on Midsummer’s Day in 1687.
